What is Urology?

Urology is a study that deals with the treatment of conditions which involve the male and female urinary tract along with the US male reproductive organs. Those who specialize in the field of urology are called urologists.They are the  healthcare professionals who  diagnose, detect and treat this group of disease and disorders.

The problems  that may be treated by urologists involve  the kidneys, the ureters (tubes that connect the kidney to the bladder), the adrenal glands, the bladder and the urethra (the tube that helps in excreting urine out of the body from the bladder).

In males, a urologist treats conditions of the epididymis, testes, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis. The field of urology involves the medical conditions which includes urinary tract infection and prostate enlargement through to the surgical management of conditions such as bladder cancer, prostate cancer, kidney stones and stress incontinence.

In certain conditions like  urinary tract cancer , urologists need to work and collaborate with oncologists or radiotherapists. Sometimes they  need to collaborate with nephrologists dealing with kidney conditions, gynaecologists dealing with  female reproductive systems and endocrinologists who are concerned with endocrine systems and hormone disorders.they  also have to collaborate with practitioners of pediatric surgery and colorectal surgery.

Endourology is a study that deals with the closed manipulation of the urinary tract. This  field has grown to minimally invasive surgical procedures. In this,  procedures are carried out using endoscopes which are  inserted into the urinary tract and  include stone removal surgery, prostate surgery and simple urethral or ureteral surgeries.

Urologic oncology

Urologic oncology  deals with genitourinary malignancies such as kidney  cancers, adrenal glands, prostate, bladder, ureters, testicles or penis.

Neurourology

Neurourology deals in the management of conditions which  involve the nervous control of the genitourinary system or abnormal urination. Neurological conditions that may lead to these conditions results in multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and spinal cord injuries.

Pediatric urology

It is a branch that deals with the correction of genitourinary problems arising in children such as undescended testes or cryptorchidism, underdeveloped genitalia and vesicoureteral reflux.

Andrology

Andrology is a branch  deals in  the disorders of the male reproductive system such as erectile dysfunction, infertility and vasectomy reversal.

Female urology

Female urology is a branch of urology which deals in, pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder and urinary incontinence.
